Cowboys CEO and co-owner Stephen Jones told The Dallas Morning News that the team plans to take a young quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft to develop under Dak Prescott. What does this mean for the futures of Trey Lance and Cooper Rush?

Cowboys’ Plans For Trey Lance

As soon as Prescott became the highest-paid player in the NFL with a four-year deal worth $240 million, Lance’s days were numbered in Dallas.

With Lance set to become a free agent, Jones revealed the team plans to let him walk.

“We took a shot on Trey and wanted to do that,” Jones told The Dallas Morning News at the scouting combine. “We think the world of Trey. But us having Dak signed up for the long-term, I think he’s probably going to be looking for something different.”

The San Francisco 49ers drafted Lance with the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. After sitting on the bench during his rookie season, Lance began the 2022 season as the starter.

Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks. Later that season, Brock Purdy became the starting quarterback, a job title he still holds.

In August 2023, the Cowboys traded a 2024 fourth-round pick for Lance.

In two seasons with the Cowboys, Lance only played in four games. His lone start came in Week 18 this season against the Washington Commanders. Lance completed 20 of 34 es for 244 yards in a 23-19 loss.

Will The Cowboys Re-Sign Cooper Rush?

Lance is not the only free agent quarterback on the Cowboys’ roster.

Cooper Rush will be a free agent this offseason. Rush went 4-4 as a starter this season in Prescott’s absence and threw for 1,844 yards, 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Due to the increase in quarterback injuries, the backup quarterback has become important to roster building. Rush will certainly have a market for teams that need a bridge quarterback or a competent backup.

Jones would like to bring back Rush more than Lance but its that may not happen due to the financials.

“You know how much we think of Cooper,” Jones said. “We just don’t know what he’s going to cost. When we’re paying Dak what we’re paying him, unfortunately, we do have to go cheap there [backup quarterback position].”

If Rush and Lance sign elsewhere, the Cowboys are prepared to select a quarterback in the draft.

“You know, I think one of our goals is to get a young quarterback in the draft,” Jones said. “I don’t know where that’s going to be. That’s why we gave a [fourth-round pick] for Trey. It seems like all the quarterbacks, even guys we have in the fourth round, go in the first. They always go so much higher than what you think.”
