Ahead of the draft, Steelers general manager Omar Khan spoke about the team’s quarterback dilemma. While Khan did not provide who will be under center heading into training camp, he did say how many will be on the team.
“We discussed in Palm Beach a couple of weeks ago. We go to camp with four quarterbacks,” Khan said Tuesday during Pittsburgh’s pre-draft news conference. “Right now, we have two on the roster. All options are on the table on how we acquire those last two. I assure you we’ll have four when we get to Latrobe (for training camp).”
The two quarterbacks on the Steelers’ roster are Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson.
Rudolph spent six seasons with the Steelers before leaving for Tennessee last season. Last month, Rudolph returned to Pittsburgh on a two-year deal.
Thompson spent his first three seasons with the Miami Dolphins before g with the Steelers in January.
The Steelers enter Thursday night’s draft with six picks, including the No. 21 overall. While the Steelers do not have to take a quarterback in the first round, the three names that have been associated with their pick are Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart, and Alabama’s Jalen Milroe.
However, it’s safe to assume that Pittsburgh will select at least one quarterback during the draft.

The elephant in the Steelers’ quarterback room is Aaron Rodgers.
The four-time MVP remains a free agent as he contemplates his future.
Rodgers spoke to Pat McAfee last week about his positive meeting with the Steelers organization, including head coach Mike Tomlin.
“I’ve talked to Mike Tomlin,” Rodgers said on The Pat McAfee Show. “He’s more than I even thought from afar, as far as the type of person he is. I have a lot of respect for what he’s accomplished in the league. [Offensive coordinator] Arthur Smith, talk about a guy that doesn’t need to work. He doesn’t need the work, but he’s a grinder. We’ve had a friendship for a couple years now. I like what he’s all about.”
Rodgers did not give the Steelers a timeline for a decision and said the organization can move on from him if the opportunity presents itself.
Tomlin said the Rodgers situation does not affect the Steelers’ approach to the draft unless they take a quarterback who can play right away.
“I think what you do in the draft oftentimes affects maybe some talent acquisition that happens after,” Tomlin said. “We’ll see how the acquisition goes this weekend.”
