Carlos Alcaraz suffered a leg injury in his Barcelona Open finals loss to Holger Rune.  An MRI was expected to determine the extent of the injury.

While we have not heard anything regarding the MRI results, there are troubling signs that he may not be able to play the Mutua Madrid Open. Alcaraz reportedly cancelled his Wednesday practice.  To make matters worse, COPE, a Spanish sports outlet, reports that “pending final tests on his adductor injury, it’s very difficult for him to play in the tournament.”

No official confirmation has come from the ATP, the tournament, or anyone in Alcaraz’s camp.

Alcaraz was last spotted at the Laureus Awards ceremony on Monday night. Carlos Alcaraz was smiling and thrilled to be in the company of elite athletes, including Rafael Nadal, winner of the Sporting Icon Award.

He did not offer a specific answer as to his injury, but Alcaraz seemed positive overall, so many tennis fans assumed it was not significant.

Alcaraz’s first match is scheduled for Saturday, so he has a few days to see if his body is healing.

Much At Stake In May For Carlos Alcaraz

If Alcaraz sits out the Madrid Open, it may be a precautionary move because he has a lot of points to defend beginning in May.  He won back-to-back Grand Slams at the French Open and Wimbledon last year.

Presumably, Alcaraz wants to play the Italian Open in early May, shortly before Roland Garros.  That tournament marks the return of World No. 1 Jannik Sinner to the ATP Tour after serving a three-month suspension for accidental ingestion of a banned substance.

While we do not know if Alcaraz will play the Mutua Madrid Open, we do know that his Netflix documentary entitled “My Way” is dropping on Wednesday, April 23.
