This is not uncommon. Spanish tennis legend Garbine Muguruza took a break for similar reasons and never returned to the game.
American Amanda Anisimova also took a break from the sport and used the time to take college classes and regain her mental and physical health. Anisimova returned to the tour with a renewed outlook and won the Doha title earlier this year.
Sorribes Tormo’s announcement comes a day after Lesia Tsurenko shared a disturbing social media update about her break from the game. Though the circumstances are very different, fans need to realize the grind of being a professional athlete and globetrotting the world for an 11-month WTA Tour is very taxing.
It is also worth mentioning that the PTPA‘s pending lawsuit against the WTA, ATP, and ITF cites the long season as one of the issues that needs to be rectified to protect the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of the players.
