Pat McAfee Rips Oregon Football Coach Dan Lanning After 5-Star Recruit Decommits: “We Don’t Like This”

ESPN College Gameday analyst Pat McAfee had some choice words for Oregon football coach Dan Lanning after one of his top recruits decommitted from the program this week. Just two weeks ago, Lanning jumped in a rooftop pool with five-star edge rusher Richard Wesley to celebrate his commitment to the University of Oregon.

Wesley Books Visits With Texas and Ohio State After Decommitting
Apparently, Wesley didn’t dive into the deep end, as he suddenly backed out of his commitment and planned visits with two of the top programs in the country.
Two weeks after the release of the pool video, Wesley has reopened his recruitment and is reportedly considering ing one of Oregon’s fiercest conference rivals.
Wesley, the No. 25 recruit in the 2026 class, will visit Texas and Ohio State, though his father believes that there’s still a good chance he lands with the Ducks.
“He’s still 90% with the Ducks,” Wesley’s father, Jonathan, told On3.
Wesley was the No. 1 edge prospect in the 2027 recruiting class before reclassifying and remains the top -rushing prospect on the West Coast.
“Since the jump, Oregon has been showing me love,” Wesley said prior to his commitment. “I talk to coaches almost every day, they text me all the time and they were begging me for the prom pictures Saturday night. I love the feeling there and I love everything there.”
In addition to Oregon, the 2026 recruit also has offers from Texas, Ohio State, USC and Texas A&M, among others.
McAfee Doesn’t Hold Back On Dan Lanning Pool Video
While McAfee was critical of Wesley, he also wanted to remind Lanning of the dangers of over-extending for an 18-year-old kid who is in the midst of making a life-changing decision.
“We want to let Coach Lanning know, we don’t like this.” McAfee said on Thursday. “ when [Tom Herman] had to send the voicemail singing Justin Bieber? Don’t do it. Can’t have it.”
Former Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawks said that he believed Lanning wasn’t entirely at fault, saying that the video “had to be the kid’s idea”.
Last season, Oregon finished 13-1 under Lanning, going undefeated in the regular season on their way to a Big Ten title. However, the Ducks were ousted by Ohio State in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinals, losing 41-21. The loss was a disappointing way to cap off one of the best seasons in program history.
