Jesse Love appeared to possess the dominant NASCAR Xfinity Series machine Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway, leading an Ag-Pro 300-best 50 of 113 laps. It wasn’t enough, though.

Creating a photo finish, Love battled Jeb Burton and Austin Hill, going three-wide under yellow-flag conditions, ending the race. Hill earned the trip to Victory Lane and Love settled for P3.

After falling short, the Richard Childress Racing driver’s attention was elsewhere. He darted to the infield care center to check on his friend, Connor Zilisch. Trailing the No. 88 Chevrolet, Love created a bump, sending the rookie into the inside retaining wall. He limped away from the crash and was released after being checked out by medical personnel.

Following a fist-pump, Zilisch didn’t appear to hold any grudges.

“I don’t know, I probably have to watch it a few times,” Love said, as reported by NASCAR.com. “At that point, man, like all you can do is put yourself in position at these races, and we do that, and we do it a lot, and the 21 (Hill) has done it for a lot longer.

“So yeah, I think that there’s definitely going to be things I could have done differently. I think I’m more upset that I turned the 88 (Zilisch) around than I ran third. Just a bummer on that part.

“I feel like as much as you can dominate these things, we dominated as much as we could.”

Entering Saturday’s Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 at Texas Motor Speedway, Love (340 points) ranks fourth in the drivers’ standings, 109 behind leader Justin Allgaier. No. 2 Hill (370) paces the circuit with three wins.
