The MLB in 2025. They’ve not only proved that prediction to be correct through the first six weeks, but have gotten off to one of the worst starts to a season in the past 130 years.

MLB News: Rockies Fire Bud Black After Historically Bad Start

Things went from bad to worse on Saturday night as they suffered a 21-0 drubbing at the hands of the San Diego Padres, which was ultimately the last straw for their manager. On Sunday, the Rockies announced that they had fired Bud Black, who had been with the team since 2017.

After Saturday’s disheartening loss, Colorado had dropped to 6-33 on the season, which was tied with the 1988 Baltimore Orioles for the worst 39-game start in the last 130 years of the MLB. They had been outscored by 128 runs up to that point, which is the second-worst mark that a team had posted through 40 games (2023 Oakland A’s were -144).

Before even hitting mid-May, the Rockies were 19.5 games out of first place in the NL West. They were able to pick up a victory on Sunday afternoon in the series finale.

Black was the seventh manager in Rockies team history, and had been with the team for eight full seasons prior to 2025. His stint got off to a hot start, as Colorado was able to qualify for the postseason two years in a row in 2017 and 2018, their first playoff appearances since 2009. But the team has failed to post a winning season in the years since, and have suffered 90+ losses in four of the last six seasons.

Black had more wins than any manager in Rockies history, despite the struggles in recent years. His 543 victories edges out Clint Hurdle’s 534, who is interestingly now the team’s bench coach. Former third base coach Warren Schaeffer will serve as the team’s interim manager for the remainder of the season.

The Rockies provided Bud Black with his second MLB managing job, as he was previously the head man for the Padres from 2007 through 2015.
