Madden, a biopic about Hall of Fame coach and broadcaster John Madden, has added several actors to the cast.

John Madden Movie: Cast

Oscar winner Nicolas Cage will star as John Madden in the biopic from writer-director David O. Russell.

Will Ferrell was previously in negotiations to play Madden. Hugh Jackman also circled the project before backing off.

In the end, the eccentric Cage signed on for the role of the iconic football personality.

“Nicolas Cage, one of our greatest and most original actors, will portray the best of the American spirit of originality, fun, and determination in which anything is possible as beloved national legend John Madden,” Russell said in a statement. “Together with the ferocious style, focus, and inspired individualism of Al Davis, owner of the underdog Oakland Raiders, the feature will be about the joy, humanity, and genius that was John Madden in a wildly inventive, cool world of the 1970s.”

Another Oscar winner, Christian Bale, will star in Madden as Al Davis, the late owner of the Raiders.

Per Deadline’s Justin Kroll, John Mulaney, Kathryn Hahn, and Sienna Miller are in talks to the cast of Madden.

Mulaney will play Trip Hawkins, founder of Electronic Arts, whose EA Sports division developed the Madden NFL video games. Hahn will play Virginia, Madden’s wife, while Miller stars as Carol, Davis’ wife.

What Is Madden About?

Madden will not be a cradle-to-grave movie. Instead, it will focus on Madden’s transition from the sidelines to his off-the-field ventures, including video games and broadcasting.

After winning the Super Bowl as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders, Madden became more famous as the face of the Madden video games and as a broadcaster for the NFL.

Madden’s legacies in coaching, video games, and broadcasting are unmatched. The Hall of Famer died in December 2021 at the age of 85.

Russell directs Madden from a screenplay he wrote after receiving an earlier version from Cambron Clark.

Madden’s producers include Russell, Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Jonathan Shukat, and Matthew Budman. David Bloomfield will executive produce. Amazon MGM Studios is behind Madden.

Production is set to start next month in Atlanta.
