J.J. Spaun made a historic list after carding a bogey-free round at Oakmont in the first round of the 2025 U.S. Open.

J.J. Spaun’s Historic Round

The U.S. Open is billed as the toughest test in golf, and Spaun ed the first day with flying colors.

Spaun shot 4-under 66 and entered the clubhouse with the lead.

What’s more impressive is Spaun carded a bogey-free round. It’s only the second bogey-free round during the U.S. Open at Oakmont this century.

Dustin Johnson shot a bogey-free round on the opening day of the 2016 U.S. Open. Johnson rode that momentum into the weekend and won the tournament, his first major championship.

Spaun was a magician around the greens. Spaun chipped in for birdie on his first hole of the day and never looked back. Spaun’s best stretch came between holes 10-17 when the 34-year-old carded four birdies.

Spaun sunk six par putts of seven feet or longer and gained four strokes with his putter.

“You’re obviously going to have to grind when you’re out of position, and I did that really well today,” Spaun said via NBC. “… That’s kind of the key to this tournament and this venue is just not losing your steam, not losing your focus, and converting those momentum-saving putts.”

Not bad for someone playing in his second U.S. Open.

Other Notable Storylines At The 2025 U.S. Open

This will be a round that Rory McIlroy would like to forget.

The 2025 Masters champion got off to a terrific start, carding a 2-under 33 on his first nine holes. Then, Oakmont fought back. McIlroy recorded four bogeys and one double bogey to finish 4-over 74.

McIlroy’s rival, Bryson DeChambeau, wasn’t too much better, finishing 3-over 73.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is currently 1-over through eight holes.

Thriston Lawrence, Sungjae Im, and Rasmus Neergaard-Peterse are currently one stroke behind Spaun at 3-under.
