Jaguars Fire Doug Pederson

After a disappointing 4-13 season, Jaguars owner Shad Khan has decided to go in a different direction and fire Pederson. Khan added that general manager Trent Baalke will return in the same role.

Khan released a statement to announce the firing.

“I had the difficult task this morning of informing Doug Pederson of my intention to hire a new head coach to lead the Jacksonville Jaguars.  Doug is an accomplished football man who will undoubtedly enjoy another chapter in his impressive NFL career, and I will be rooting for Doug and his wife Jeannie when that occasion arrives,” Khan said. “As much as Doug and I both wish his experience here in Jacksonville would have ended better, I have an obligation first and foremost to serve the best interests of our team and especially our fans, who faithfully our team and are overdue to be rewarded.  In that spirit, the time to summon new leadership is now.

“I strongly believe it is possible next season to restore the winning environment we had here not long ago.  I will collaborate with General Manager Trent Baalke and others, within and close to our organization, to hire a leader who shares my ambition and is ready to seize the extraordinary opportunity we will offer in Jacksonville.”

Pederson was hired as head coach in the 2022 offseason. In his first season, Pederson led the Jaguars to an AFC South title with a 9-8 record.

The Jaguars defeated the Chargers during the wild-card round after being down 27-0. Jacksonville eventually fell to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round.

The Jaguars got off to an 8-3 start in 2023 before losing five of the next six games to miss the playoffs.

2024 has been a disaster for the Jaguars, with quarterback Trevor Lawrence regressing before suffering a season-ending injury.

Pederson, who won a Super Bowl as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, finishes his Jaguars’ tenure with a 22-29 record in three seasons.

Who Will Be The Next Head Coach Of The Jaguars?

With Pederson’s firing, the Jaguars must find their sixth head coach since 2011.

The Jaguars’ head coaching position has become one of the more attractive openings on the market. The team has a young roster with a potential franchise quarterback. Jacksonville owns the No. 5 pick in the NFL Draft.

Additionally, Jacksonville is in the process of building a new stadium.

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson will be one of the hottest targets on the coaching market. After his success with Jared Goff, Johnson could be the right offensive mind to help resurrect Lawrence.

Other names to look at as potential head coaching replacements include Mike Vrabel and Brian Flores.
