The NHL Conference Finals have concluded and a Stanley Cup rematch is set. The defending champion Florida Panthers will take on the Edmonton Oilers with the championship on the line for the second straight season, and the series will get underway on Wednesday, June 4th.

One of the big questions surrounding the matchup is travel fatigue, as there are no two NHL cities that are further from one another than Edmonton, Alberta and Sunrise, Florida.

2,500+ Miles Separate The Final Two NHL Teams For Stanley Cup

It is the longest “road trip” that any two teams can undertake. The distance between Sunrise and Edmonton is 2,541 miles (as the crow flies), but the flights are even slightly longer. It is assumed that the Panthers will be taking off from Fort Lauderdale Airport, which is listed at 2,560 air miles from Edmonton International Airport. The flight can last anywhere from 7.5 to 8 hours.

Players from both sides are all too familiar with the trip. Last year’s Stanley Cup Final went the full length of seven games, meaning that the teams switched cities a total of four times.

The Oilers got the worst of it, though. Connor McDavid and company made the long haul flight a total of six times, including their initial trip to Florida and the flight back home after Game 7. That means that over a span of roughly 17 days, the team flew over 15,350 total miles, all while playing in the most high-stakes hockey series of their lives (and while battling back from a 3-0 series deficit).

Those 15,350 miles are enough to wrap about 61% of the Earth’s surface. It is roughly the same length as flying from Edmonton to Auckland, New Zealand and back again.

It isn’t the longest trip of the four major sports, though. The furthest trip of all is Miami to Seattle, which is done in the NFL between the Dolphins and Seahawks, MLB between the Marlins and Mariners, and in the NHL for the Panthers and Kraken. That flight is 2,731 miles each way.

The longest flight ing any two NBA cities is Miami to Portland (2,704 miles).
