Fans of the Dallas Mavericks have undergone a rollercoaster of emotions over the past few months. So when a recent report stated that they are the most negative of any fan base in the NBA, it comes with little surprise.

Mavericks, Celtics Have The Angriest Fans In The NBA

Sports betting expert Gautham Marthandan did a deep dive on NBA fandom recently. While reporting for Vegas Insider, Marthandin sifted through over a million comments on Reddit and the subsequent team subreddits, and compiled data from his findings. He found out which fan bases use the most curse words, which words they use in particular, and which used the most comments that would be deemed as “negative”.

The New York Knicks fan base won for most vulgar comments. The report said that 8.37% of all surveyed posts featured a swear word of some kind, nearly a full percentage point above the Memphis Grizzlies in second place at 7.41%. It seems like things are cleaner out west, as the Jazz (3.15%) and Trail Blazers (3.55%) fan bases used the fewest swear words.

The “S” and “F” words were the most prevalently used throughout the NBA subreddits.

Fans in Dallas were standouts when it comes to the negative comments. Nearly a third of all of the gathered posts on the Mavericks subreddit were flagged as being negative, with an official number of 32.41%. Next on the list is the Boston Celtics fan base at 31.73% negative, and the Minnesota Timberwolves right behind them at 31.52%.

The least negative NBA fan bases were those of the San Antonio Spurs (21.8%) and Washington Wizards (21.99%).

Most of the negative comments regarding the Mavericks likely stem from the Luka Doncic trade. Anger was a common theme amongst the fans in Dallas during the latter half of the 2024-25 season, as they felt betrayed by having their franchise superstar shipped off.

The tide could change on the negative notion this summer, though. The Mavericks were the unlikely winners of the 2025 NBA Draft lottery, and will have the rights to select a player that could be a franchise savior in Cooper Flagg.
