With Texas A&M needing a new men’s basketball coach, will Chris Beard leave Ole Miss to coach the Aggies?

Chris Beard Staying At Ole Miss

Beard is staying put in Oxford.

Per ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Jeff Borzello, Beard will remain at Ole Miss.

The university is now working with Beard on a new contract, a stronger NIL pool for college basketball, and more resources for his staff.

Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter confirmed the news with a picture of himself and Beard.

“Why stop now?” Carter wrote in the caption.

Beard, 52, had discussions with Texas A&M about their head coaching vacancy after Buzz Williams left for the Maryland job. Beard had significant ties to Texas, having attended the University of Texas in the 1990s.

Beard also coached Texas Tech (2016-2021) and Texas (2021-2023) before arriving at Ole Miss in 2023.

Beard has led four schools to the NCAA Tournament, highlighted by a national championship appearance with texas Tech in 2019.

In December 2022, Beard was arrested for a felony domestic violence charge. The University of Texas fired Beard in January 2023.

The charges against Beard were later dismissed.

Beard is coming off one of the best seasons in school history. Beard led Ole Miss to the Sweet 16 for the second time in program history.

Michigan State defeated Ole Miss 73-70 to end the Rebels’ season.

Beard has back-to-back 20 seasons for a total record of 44-24.

Where Does Texas A&M Look Now?

With Beard staying at Ole Miss, where does Texas A&M go from here?

The next call will likely go to Grant McCasland at Texas Tech. The second-year coach led the Red Raiders to the Elite Eight, where they lost a close game to Florida.

Oklahoma’s Porter Moser could be a viable candidate if Texas A&M wants a coach with ties to the school.

Moser led the Sooners to the NCAA Tournament this past season for the first time since 2021. Moser was an assistant coach at Texas A&M from 1991 to 1995.
