Bill Belichick Adds Michigan RB Benjamin Hall, UNC LB Amare Campbell Enters Transfer Portal Again

UNC football continues to navigate the new age of the transfer portal under new head coach Bill Belichick.
Bill Belichick continues to build his new program piece by piece, and on Monday, he found another puzzle piece in the form of former Michigan running back Benjamin Hall. At 5-foot-11 and 235 pounds, Hall brings both size and upside to the backfield, ing North Carolina with three seasons of eligibility still ahead of him.
Hall, who redshirted in 2023 after appearing in just three games for the Wolverines, saw limited action in 2024. He played in six games, carrying the ball 12 times for 72 yards and adding 12 receiving yards. Though his touches were few, Hall’s potential was expected to be tapped into more this coming season in Ann Arbor.
Instead, he’s opted for a fresh start under Belichick’s guidance.
Hall’s Journey: Patience and Persistence
Hall is no stranger to sharing the spotlight. In high school at North Cobb, he split carries with fellow standout David Eziomume, now at Clemson. That experience in crowded backfields likely shaped his resilience—and now, he’ll bring that mentality to a North Carolina team that already rushed for 2,727 yards and 26 touchdowns last season.
Hall’s decision to transfer comes at a crucial time. The spring transfer portal window, open from April 16 for 10 days, allows players like Hall to reassess their opportunities and seek new roles where their contributions might be more significant.
In Belichick’s system, Hall could find the volume and consistency he’s been waiting for.

Amare Campbell Re-Enters Portal After Breakout Year
As one player arrives, another departs. Just months after pulling his name from the transfer portal, North Carolina linebacker Amare Campbell is once again seeking a new home.
Campbell, a 6-foot, 230-pound middle linebacker, leaves Chapel Hill with two years of eligibility remaining. His departure is notable, not just for its timing, but for the impact he had on the field. In 2024, Campbell emerged as one of the Tar Heels’ most reliable defenders, finishing third on the team with 72 tackles and tying for the team lead with 6.5 sacks.
Across his career, Campbell totaled 86 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, one interception, and a forced fumble.

Campbell’s exit leaves a sizable gap in North Carolina’s defense. His leadership in the middle and his ability to pressure quarterbacks were integral to the team’s defensive identity. For a player once recruited as a three-star prospect in the 2023 class, choosing UNC over West Virginia and Maryland, Campbell’s rise was a testament to hard work and adaptability.
Now, his journey continues elsewhere.
Portal Timing: A New Era of College Football
Both Hall’s arrival and Campbell’s departure highlight the fluid nature of today’s college football landscape. The transfer portal, especially during the spring window, has become a central mechanism for players and programs to reshape themselves quickly.
As Belichick molds his roster with additions like Hall, other teams will be watching players like Campbell—ready to make moves of their own. The offseason has only just begun, but the pieces are already shifting, and the game’s next chapter is being written in real time.
