Barcelona Open: Carlos Alcaraz And Arthur Fils Meet For 2nd Time In A Week

In the movie “Groundhog Day,” the same events happen over and over, and that’s somewhat what tennis fans are experiencing with the Barcelona Open semifinal matchup between Carlos Alcaraz and Arthur Fils.
You need only short-term memory to recall that the pair played in last week’s Monte-Carlo Masters quarterfinals. That was their first career meeting and was one of the best matches of the tournament.
Arthur Fils correctly said he had opportunities to win that match. With a quick turnaround, will Fils get a different result?
Here are a few factors to consider in their encore meeting.
1. Arthur Fils Is Rested
Unfortunately, there were only six minutes of tennis in Fils’ quarterfinal match with Stefanos Tsitsipas. Tsitsipas took a medical timeout, clearly struggling with an issue before retiring at 0-2. While tennis fans were cheated of a good matchup and we hope Tsitsipas is okay, Arthur Fils will be fresh and ready for Alcaraz.
2. Carlos Alcaraz Has Played Better In Barcelona
Carlos Alcaraz has found his clay-court groove in Barcelona. He struggled with slow starts and play that was not at his personal best at Monte-Carlo. In contrast, Alcaraz has not dropped a set this week in Barcelona.
3. Both Players Have Plenty of Incentive To Win

Arthur Fils is inching closer and closer to breaking into the Top 10 for the first time in his career.
Carlos Alcaraz is a two-time champion in Barcelona, riding a 13-match winning streak while calling this his home tournament.
His idol is Rafael Nadal, and the Barcelona Open center court is named after Nadal. Nadal is a 12-time champion at this tournament. Alcaraz wants Spanish tennis to continue to dominate this event.
