6 Best Remaining NFL Free Agents And Their Top Landing Spots For The 2025 Season

The 2025 NFL season is right around the corner but several high-profile free agents remain unsigned. The top remaining free agents include a handful of veterans coming off of disappointing campaigns but history says that they can still make an impact in the right situation. With several teams failing to address team needs in the draft or free agency, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a few more dominos fall before the start of training camp.
We’ll take a look at the best remaining free agents who should find new teams before the start of the 2025 season.
Amari Cooper, WR
Potential Landing Spots: DAL, DEN, LAR
Amari Cooper is arguably the top available free agent on either side of the ball. With mandatory minicamps just a few weeks away, there are several teams that could benefit from another veteran wide receiver, including the Dallas Cowboys, one of Cooper’s former teams.
Cooper will turn 31 year-old before the start of the 2025 season but he’s logged 1,000-yard campaigns in four of the last six seasons and is just one year removed from a 1,250-yard season in Cleveland.
The Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams are among the teams who could benefit from Cooper’s services. Both teams could use another proven weapon in the wide receiver room.
Los Angeles might be the most interesting fit, as Cooper’s presence would give Sean McVay the flexibility to move Davante Adams and Puca Nacua into the slot to generate mismatches.
Keenan Allen, WR
Potential Landing Spots: ARI, MIA, PHI, SF
Keenan Allen didn’t make the type of impact that many expected in his lone season in Chicago but he’s still a productive slot receiver. He finished with 70 catches for 744 yards and seven touchdowns while playing with a young Bears team.
Several teams could benefit from a proven option in the slot, including the Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, and Philadelphia Eagles.
Among them, the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles might be the most interesting fit. Allen would a talented receiving corps with A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith in Philadelphia but GM Howie Roseman has been searching for that elusive No. 3 wide receiver to take the offense to the next level.
J.K. Dobbins, RB
Potential Landing Spots: CHI, BAL, DEN
There are only a handful of teams that need an impact player at running back heading into training camp but Dobbins may have to settle for a timeshare at best. Dobbins is still only 26 years old and he’s shown a knack for getting in the end zone with 22 total touchdowns in 37 career games.
The Bears might be the most obvious landing spot for the former Chargers’ RB. Head coach Ben Johnson developed a reputation in Detroit for leaning on the run game and using a two-back approach with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs.
Another interesting destination would be a second stint in Baltimore with the Ravens, where he started his NFL career. Dobbins could provide some insurance for an aging Derrick Henry, while giving the Ravens a formidable 1-2 punch in the backfield.
Justin Simmons, S
Potential Landing Spots: PHI, TB, CIN
The best fit for Simmons might be reuniting with Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who coached him during his best years in Denver. Simmons has compiled 21 interceptions over the past five years and could be a nice veteran addition to a secondary that got considerably younger in the offseason.
Tampa Bay and Cincinnati are also strong fits for the nine-year veteran. With the Buccaneers, Simmons would team up with Antoine Winfield Jr. in the secondary and could make an immediate impact in Todd Bowles’ defense.
Meanwhile, Cincinnati needs as much secondary help as it can get after conceding 25.5 points per game a year ago.
Za’Darius Smith, DE
Potential Landing Spots: DET, KC, CIN
Za’Darius Smith had nine sacks a year ago while splitting time with the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions.
Detroit released Smith during the offseason but could still land with the Lions on a new deal. Smith didn’t want to take a pay cut and has had time to test the free agent market but teams appear to be reluctant to add a defensive end who will be 33 years old when the 2025 season kicks off.
Lions GM Brad Holmes has already left the door open for a potential return, telling the Detroit Free Press, “We’ve been keeping in touch with his agent and he understands that process, so we’ll just see how it goes.”
Kansas City and Cincinnati are also potential landing spots for the veteran defensive end. The Bengals could bring in Smith as insurance if they can’t get a deal done quickly with Trey Hendrickson.
Asante Samuel Jr., CB
Potential Landing Spots: NO, MIA, TB
Unlike some of the other potential free agents on this list, former Chargers cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. might have to wait a bit longer before getting a new contract.
Samuel Jr. suffered a gruesome neck injury last season and is awaiting a final check up in July to make sure he’s cleared to play after having surgery in April. While he hasn’t lived up to lofty expectations as a second-round pick, he had at least two interceptions in his first three seasons before his injury-riddled 2024 campaign.
Samuel Jr. has already had a visit with the New Orleans Saints but might fit better with a team like Miami or Tampa Bay, where he can make better use of his late closing speed and play-making mentality while playing primarily in zone coverage.
Honorable Mention: Nick Chubb, RB
Potential Landing Spots: DAL, BAL, DEN
Another high-profile running back still searching for a place to play in 2025, Chubb didn’t show the same kind of explosiveness in his return from injury. Last year, he averaged a career-low 3.3 yards per carry in eight games.
There are still some running back needy teams who could take a chance on the 29-year-old veteran. Dallas, Baltimore, and Denver could all take a chance on the former Pro Bowl RB but it remains to be seen if anyone will bite.
The main issue with Chubb is that he’s getting up there in age and has plenty of tread on his tires after notching 1340 carries during his NFL career.
