While speaking with NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo on Tuesday from the NFL’s Annual League Meeting, York said he’s waiting for Purdy to decide on what he wants to do before moving forward with contract extension talks.

“I think (contract talks have) been good,” York said. “It’s not conversations that I’m having. … He’s got to make a decision with what he wants to do. I don’t think we’re that far apart. I think we can sit down and get something done. Whenever he’s ready, we’re ready.”

Purdy is entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract. San Francisco does not have to sign Purdy to an extension this offseason.

However, it’s a risk for both sides to enter the season without an extension. If Purdy plays well, his price will only go up. However, that number will subsequently decrease if Purdy struggles in 2025.

If the 49ers want Purdy and the quarterback wants to stay in San Francisco, it’s in both parties’ interests to get a deal done this offseason.

York knows the importance of locking down a quarterback for the future, so he hopes to get a deal done with Purdy, a player he believes is “top 10” at his position.

“I’ve been in situations where you have a great roster and the quarterback isn’t set, and it’s hard to have sustained success,” York said. “We want to make sure that Brock is a long-term partner. We want to make sure that he’s a part of our team for a long time.

Jed York On ‘Sacrifices’ To Pay Quarterback

Over the past three seasons, the 49ers have had one of the biggest advantages in football: a quarterback on a rookie contract.

Purdy has had a base salary of under $1 million the past three seasons. Without an extension, Purdy will earn a base salary of $5.3 million in 2025.

However, the organization has committed to g Purdy to an extension, which will likely result in the quarterback’s base salary rising to at least $50 million annually.

With the impending contract, the 49ers had to make tough decisions and move on from 17 players this offseason, including Deebo Samuel, Dre Greenlaw, Charvarius Ward, Talanoa Hufanga, and Jordan Mason.

York acknowledges the “sacrifices” the team has to make to pay Purdy. To York, he hopes it will pay off in the long run.

“It’s just a math thing,” York said via KNBR. “When you sit down with your guys and figure out where do you want to go, what do you want to build, when you make the decision that you want to pay a quarterback that has obviously been underpaid for his first three seasons in the NFL. When you make that change, you have to make sacrifices somewhere. It’s a decision that we made collectively, and we’re hoping that we make somebody the highest-paid player in the history of our franchise.”
