49ers Continue To Add Former Jets Who Played Under Robert Saleh

The New York Jets, and he is bringing some players along with him.
49ers Trade For Bryce Huff, Who Played For Robert Saleh In New York
On Friday morning, it was announced that the 49ers were finalizing a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. It is unclear what San Francisco will be giving up in the deal, but they’ll be bringing in rusher Bryce Huff to help shore up their defensive front.

Huff played one year in Philadelphia, but was under Saleh’s tutelage for the three years prior. He signed with the Jets as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2020, but played sparingly in his first season prior to Saleh’s arrival. Huff had a career year in 2023, notching a team-high ten sacks despite playing in just 42% of defensive snaps.
His breakout year earned him a three-year contract with the Eagles, though he was injured before the team’s Super Bowl run in 2024. Huff will likely battle for the starting rushing spot opposite of Joey Bosa for the campaign.
Other Former Jets Players Have Signed With San Francisco
Bryce Huff’s arrival is just the latest in the migration of former Jets players to the 49ers roster. On Wednesday, the team signed two players to one-year contracts. Linebacker Chazz Surratt played 137 of his 146 career snaps in 2024, and his g will add depth to the position for San Francisco. They also brought in punter Thomas Morstead, who spent the last two seasons in New York.
49ers have or will add at least three former Jets who played under Robert Saleh in the span of a week:

Defense was certainly the focus for the 49ers this offseason. They’ve made 8 free agent gs so far on that side of the ball, and added 6 draft picks as well. San Francisco is hoping that the group of newcomers will help bolster a defense that finished 29th in points allowed in 2024.
The reunion with Saleh should help. It was his success as the 49ers defensive coordinator that got him the job as head coach with the Jets, and he’ll look to replicate his accomplishments. In 2019, he led San Francisco’s defense to a 2nd place finish in yards allowed, and a 5th place finish the following year.
