The City Of Troy horse profile has been widely searched for since the superstar Aidan O’Brien-trained colt burst onto the horse racing scene in 2023. With that in mind you can learn all about City Of Troy, the 2024 Epsom Derby winner – including his total career prize money to date, his hot pedigree and where his next races might be.

City Of Troy Horse Pedigree Fully ‘Justified’

When it comes to horse racing pedigrees, City Of Troy has one of the best in the business – so before he even set foot on a racecourse he had a big reputation to uphold.

The good news for his breeders is that he’s had no issues when it came to ‘Justifying’ his pedigree.

Horse racing fans out there might have guessed it by now (with the pun clue) – but City Of Troy’s sire (his dad) is a US horse called Justify, who is the most recent US Triple Crown winner (2018) having won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes that year for trainer Bob Baffert.

Meaning with this high-class US dirt pedigree in his locker there is every chance the City Of Troy horse racing owners could send him to America to tackle the 2024 Breeders’ Cup (more on that below).

Justify ended his racing career in 2018 with five wins from his six runs – with his only defeat coming when disqualified in the Santa Anita Derby that season. He was also sent off as favourite for all his starts and won a huge $3,798,000 in total prize money.

Then, when looking at City Of Troy’s dam, this is another high class mare called Together Forever, who was also trained by Aidan O’Brien.

Together Forever won three of her nine career starts, with her big highlight the 2014 Group One Dubai Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket.

City Of Troy Also Related To 2001 Epsom Derby Winner Galileo

The City Of Troy horse pedigree runs deeper too.

His dam’s sire is Galileo – making the 2001 Epsom Derby winner his grandad and also meaning City Of Troy followed in his hoofprints to also win the most famous flat race in the world.

Galileo stood at Coolmore Stud after retiring in 2001 and before dying at the age of 23 in 2021 went onto sire many top Group One horses – including the Ascot Gold Cup winner Kyprios.

  • Sire: Justify
  • Dam: Together Forever
  • Dam’s Sire: Galileo
  • Breeder: Orpendale, Chelston and Wynatt

WATCH: City Of Troy Winning The 2024 Epsom Derby

Having flopped in the English 2000 Guineas on May 4th at Newmarket (9th of 11) as the hot 4/6 favourite – all eyes were on City Of Troy in the 2024 Epsom Derby to see if he could bounce back to form.

Despite that poor run at HQ, horse racing punters still backed City Of Troy into favourite for the Epsom Derby (3/1) and after travelling strongly through the race didn’t disappoint under jockey Ryan Moore to win by 2 3/4 lengths (watch below).

WATCH: City Of Troy Winning The 2024 Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown

Fresh from his 2024 Epsom Derby win, City Of Troy’s next race came at Sandown in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes – the first time he raced against the older horses.

City Of Troy was sent off as the red-hot 1/4 favourite in the betting and getting 10lbs from the older horses in the race managed to get the job done by a length at the Sandown Park winning post.

However, the win wasn’t without some testing moment for his backers as City Of Troy looked in trouble at one point up the Sandown straight and then also hung right in the closing stages (see for yourself here).

City Of Troy’s Only Defeat (So Far) Came In The 2000 Guineas

Having won the 2023 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket by an easy 3 1/2 lengths, City Of Troy was put away for the winter with the best UK bookmakers making him the clear 2000 Guineas ante-post favourite ahead of the first of the English Classics the following season.

However, when the race came (4th May 2024) – almost seven months after he was last seen on the track – City Of Troy failed to live up to the hype on that occasion.

Despite being sent off as the 4/6 market leader, City Of Troy backers knew their fate early on in the race with the colt failing to pick up over that mile trip (watch below). With his trainer’s rep at the course saying he got tired on his first run back.

City Of Troy’s Best Win Came In The Juddmonte International at York

The most recent race for City Of Troy came with a win in the Group One Juddmonte International at York on Wednesday 21st August 2024.

This victory was his best yet – beating the classy French-trained Calandagan, who had recently won the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot by 6 lengths, by a length (watch below).

In the process City Of Troy smashed Sea The Stars’ track record (2m 5.29s) – when running almost a second quicker at 2m 4:32s.

After the race, City Of Troy’s trainer – Aidan O’Brien – went on record as saying this colt is the best he’s trained – and he’s handled some greats in the past.

City Of Troy’s Last Race Came In The Breeders’ Cup Classic

Before retiring to stud City Of Troy’s last race on the track came in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic – but unfortunately the horse couldn’t bow out with a win – missing the break and trailing in 8th.

However, it wasn’t all bad news for his Coolmore owners as they also owned the winner Sierra Leone and have the breeding rights to the runner-up Fierceness.

The race was run on Saturday 2nd November 2024 – watch below.
