Wrexham AFC’s transfer consultant, Les Reed, has ruled out moves for Premier League megastars Kevin De Bruyne and Jamie Vardy.

Owned by actor duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham are one of the most exciting clubs in English football. In the last four years, the Welsh side has seen a rapid rise to relevancy. Clinching promotions on the bounce, they have gone from being a non-league side to qualifying for the Championship.

Ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign, Wrexham are expected to make some big gs. There are talks of some Premier League talent heading to the SToK Racecourse. However, household names like Vardy and De Bruyne are supposedly out of reach.

Wrexham AFC: Les Reed Forced to Rule Out Kevin De Bruyne Transfer 1v4g6v

Both Jamie Vardy and Kevin De Bruyne will become free agents this summer, having bid their goodbyes to Leicester City and Manchester City, respectively.

Some reports have credited Wrexham with an interest in De Bruyne and Vardy. Transfer chief Les Reed, however, has bluntly ruled out a move for either of the Premier League legends.

Speaking to The i Paper, he said:

Let’s take Jamie Vardy. Everyone thinks he’s out of contract, there’s no transfer fee, Wrexham could do that. You’re talking about players who are on £140,000-a-week. We are a million miles away from that because we don’t get Premier League revenues or broadcasting money.

I think we were linked with Kevin De Bruyne at one stage! There is a certain level of Premier League players who, if they are on £100k to 150k-a-week, are still going to get close to that if they move to the MLS or Saudi Arabia than if they go to Wrexham.

Reed then went on to debunk the “unlimited budget” claims, saying Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s deep pockets do not impact purchasing power.

We will have a decent budget. Everyone externally thinks we’ve got an unlimited budget because of our owners, but that’s not true. We’ll have a good budget simply because we’ve got very good revenues,” he added.

That’s the benefit of the owners. It’s not their deep pockets, it’s their ability to generate higher revenues, which enables us to spend within the regulations and offer decent salaries.

Wrexham AFC Eyeing Historic Four Consecutive Promotions  732w71

Wrexham have secured three consecutive promotions in English football, climbing from non-League to the Championship. The ultimate hurdle beckons, with a promotion to the Premier League within theoretical reach.

Settling into the Championship would be a realistic goal for Wrexham, but Les Reed is not content with it. He clarified that the Premier League remains their top objective.

We’re not by any means predicting that we’re going to go [straight] to the Premier League, but we don’t just want to go ‘okay, the journey is over, we’re in the Championship, let’s stabilise and consolidate’,” he said.

We need to get through this window with some good recruitment and establish ourselves, not as a survivor, but as a challenger, i.e. in a good season, could we get into the play-offs? We would love to break that record [of four straight promotions] and, given the circumstances, we’ll give it our best shot.

No team in English football have qualified for the Premier League on the back of four consecutive promotions. Truro City F.C. and Shaw Lane A.F.C. are the only English teams to secure four consecutive promotions. However, their achievements were much more modest.

Truro secured promotions from the South Western League to the Southern League Division One South & West. Shaw Lane, meanwhile, went from Sheffield & Hallam County Senior League Division 1 to Northern Counties East League Premier Division.
