Tottenham Hotspur ended their 17-year wait for a major trophy after beating Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa Cup final on May 21. Below, SportsCasting takes a look at the last time each Premier League club won major silverware.

It had been a difficult second season for Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham. Lacklustre showings in the Premier League saw them tumble down to 17th place in the rankings, making them the worst team to retain their place in the English top flight. Luckily, they still had one chance to redeem themselves, and boy, did they make it count!

Before the Europa League triumph at San Mames, Spurs had last triumphed in the EFL Cup in 2008.

Below is a list of when each Premier League team won a major trophy, starting with the most recent.

The Last Time Each Premier League Club Last Won A Trophy

Tottenham Hotspur – 2025 Europa League

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur won the 2024-25 UEFA Europa League, not only ending a long, 17-year wait for a major trophy but also keeping the Aussie’s record of second-season-trophy-wins intact. They also became the lowest-ranked team in history to win a major European trophy.

Manchester United, who last won the Europa League in 2016-17, dominated the game on paper. They had 73% possession, had 16 shots, and created four big chances. Spurs, meanwhile, had just three shots, one of which landed on target, and created one big chance. The north London club, however, made that single big chance count, with Brennan Johnson poking it in three minutes before half time.

Man Utd, on the other hand, squandered all four of their prominent scoring opportunities, losing their golden ticket to the Champions League and marking the end of a disastrous campaign.

Crystal Palace – 2025 FA Cup

Crystal Palace made history in front of a packed Wembley Stadium on Monday, May 17, winning the FA Cup at the mighty Manchester City’s expense. Eberechi Eze fired the south London team in front in the 16th minute, converting from Daniel Munoz’s layoff.

However, with so much time left on the clock, Man City were favourites to turn it around. Luckily for the underdogs, they had an unbeatable Dean Henderson in goal that afternoon, with the Englishman making six saves, including Omar Marmoush’s penalty, to keep City at bay.

As the final whistle blew at Wembley, pandemonium ensued at the Palace end, as their club had claimed their maiden major honour in their 120-year history. Newcastle – 2025 Carabao Cup

Before March 16, 2025, 14 Premier League teams had won a major trophy more recently than Newcastle.

Newcastle’s last taste of major trophy success came in 1955 when they beat Manchester City 3-1 to win the FA Cup.

They are now top of this list after Dan Burn and Alexander Isak wrote themselves into Newcastle folklore after scoring in their 2-1 victory over Liverpool to win the EFL / Carabao Cup.

Manchester United – 2024 FA Cup

Given their performances this season, it is surprising that Manchester United were top of this list before Newcastle’s win on Sunday.

Goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo guided the Red Devils to FA Cup success over local rivals Manchester City.

Despite their poor season, United could win more silverware this season, as they are still in contention for the Europa League.

Manchester City – 2023/24 Premier League

Pep Guardiola’s side have been near unstoppable in the Premier League over recent years.

Last season, Manchester City won their fourth consecutive title by finishing two points above Arsenal.

Should City fail to win the FA Cup, this will be their first trophyless season since Guardiola’s first campaign at the club in 2016-17.

Liverpool – 2024 Carabao Cup

Liverpool failed to retain their Carabao Cup trophy, which was won by ‘Klopp’s Kids’ – under the legendary German manager against Chelsea last year.

The Reds were off the boil as they produced a poor display in their 2-1 defeat to Newcastle.

However, the Reds do have a 12-point lead over Arsenal in the Premier League with nine games to play.

Liverpool could win two major trophies this season

West Ham – 2023 Europa Conference League

Though a relatively new tournament, the Europa Conference League is still classed as a major trophy.

West Ham beat Fiorentina 2-1 to win the trophy thanks to a 90th minute Jarrod Bowen winner.

The Hammers have also reached the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the Europa League in recent seasons.

Chelsea – 2022 Club World Cup

Chelsea lifted the Club World Cup in February 2022 after a 2-1 extra-time win over Palmeiras.

It came after they won the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup in 2021.

However, they have not won a trophy under the new ownership model, despite spending over £1bn in transfers.

Leicester City – 2021 FA Cup

Leicester look like they will be heading towards their second relegation in three seasons this term.

Despite that, only five Premier League teams have won a major trophy more recently than the Foxes.

Youri Tielemans scored the only goal as Leicester beat Chelsea 1-0 in the 2021 FA Cup final.

Arsenal – 2020 FA Cup

Mikel Arteta got his hands on the FA Cup in his first season at the Emirates but has not won a major trophy since.

They have won a couple of Community Shields but have agonisingly missed out on the Premier League title in the last two seasons.

Arsenal look set to miss out again this season to Liverpool, but they could still win the Champions League.

Aston Villa – 1996 Football League Cup

The last time that Premier League club Aston Villa won a major trophy was nearly 30 years ago.

That came when they beat Leeds United 3-0 in the Football League Cup final.

Aston Villa are strong contenders to win the FA Cup this season where they next face Preston in the quarter-finals. They also look likely to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League but would face a PSG side who impressively beat Liverpool in the Round of 16.

Everton – 1995 FA Cup

Paul Rideout scored the only goal as Everton beat Manchester United in the 1995 FA Cup final.

The closest they have come to winning a trophy since is when they lost to Chelsea in the 2009 FA Cup final.

Everton fans will be hoping for better luck when they move to their new home on Bramley-Moore Dock next season.

Nottingham Forest – 1990 League Cup

Nottingham Forest are a club which is steeped in history given that they are a two-time winner of the European Cup.

However, their last major trophy came in 1990 when they beat Oldham in the League Cup final.

Forest’s incredible form this season though makes them one of the favourites to win the FA Cup. However, they face a tricky clash against Brighton in the quarter-finals.

Ipswich Town – 1981 UEFA Cup

Ipswich Town’s return to the Premier League has not gone well as they look set for relegation, and their last major trophy came 44 years ago.

Guided by the legendary Sir Bobby Robson, they beat AZ Alkmaar 5-4 on aggregate in a two-legged UEFA Cup final in 1981.

Their slim trophy hopes this season ended with a fifth-round FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Wolves – 1980 League Cup

The last time that Premier League club Wolves won a major trophy was the League Cup in 1980.

They beat Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest 1-0 in the final thanks to an Andy Gray goal.

Wolves though haven’t reached the final of any major competition since that victory.

Southampton – 1976 FA Cup

Southampton recently lifted the playoff trophy at Wembley last year but that doesn’t classify as a major trophy.

So you have to go back to 1976 when the Saints beat Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup final.

It has been a tough season for Southampton who look certain to drop back down to the Championship.

Premier League Teams Who Have Not Won A Major Trophy

Fulham finished as runners-up in the 1975 FA Cup final and the 2010 Europa League. Their highest-ever league finish in the top flight was seventh in the 2008-09 campaign.

Brighton made the FA Cup final in 1983, where they lost to Manchester United, while their highest top-flight finish is sixth in 2022-23.

Neither Brentford nor Bournemouth have won a major trophy and haven’t reached either an FA Cup or League Cup final. Brentford’s highest league finish was fifth in 1936, while Bournemouth’s best was ninth in 2017.

Palace, Fulham, Brighton and Bournemouth could yet win a trophy this season as they have all reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Fulham will host the Eagles, Brighton host Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth will welcome tournament favourites Manchester City.
