Palmer’s seventh goal of the season was the decisive score of the afternoon after Aleksander Isak’s goal for the visitors had cancelled out Nicolas Jackson’s opener.
Jackson slotted home an easy finish after Pedro Neto squared the ball to him in the 18th minute. But it was Palmer who created the goal.
His inch-perfect through ball from deep set Neto on his way, scything through Newcastle’s defence and bying the Magpies’ midfield.
The visitors equalised through Isak before half time but could not find a winner. They could have scored another when Isak rounded Chelsea keeper Sanchez, but last-ditch Blues defence kept him from finding the net a second time.
Palmer’s winner came just after the break, slotting the ball past Nick Pope from just inside the box.
Chelsea then had a late penalty awarded when Christopher Nkunku appeared to be fouled inside the box. But after a review, the VAR footage showed the forward slipped.

The result took Chelsea into the top four ahead of Arsenal’s game against Liverpool, though the Blues will drop to fifth unless Liverpool take all three points at the Emirates.
Regardless, Enzo Maresca had made a fine start to life at Stamford Bridge. With five wins, two draws and only two defeats so far (against Liverpool and Manchester City), Chelsea are well in the hunt for Champions League football next season.
Newcastle meanwhile have struggled in the opening months of the campaign and are now winless if their last five league games.
Defeat in West London has left them 12th in the table, five points below Chelsea and just three wins from their first nine.
Eddie Howe’s side will get another chance to beat Chelsea within a matter of days, though.
Wednesday sees Chelsea making the long trip up to Tyneside to face Newcastle at St James’ Park in the Carabao Cup last 16.
