The Derby Trio Are The Best Horses In The Race

The Belmont Stakes is the site of the rubber match between Sovereignty, Journalism, and Baeza. Sovereignty won the Kentucky Derby, while Journalism won the Preakness Stakes.

“Sovereignty, Journalism, and Baeza are clearly — in my opinion and in the opinion of most people who do what I do — head and shoulders — the three best three-year-olds out there,” Moss said. “There’s a big gap between those three and the others.”

Moss feels “pretty confident” that those three are going to finish in the top three in some order.

Moss believes that Sovereignty will eventually become the favorite. That being said, Baeza is the value play because of his odds and ability to keep up with Sovereignty and Journalism.

The One Big Question About Journalism

Journalism is the only horse this year to run in all three races of the Triple Crown.

According to Moss, horses that run in all three races (or even the final two races) finish worse in the Belmont than in the Preakness. Over the last 20 to 25 years, Moss said that stat runs true 86% of the time.

However, the Belmont Stakes runs at Saratoga for a mile and a quarter this year instead of a mile and a half at Belmont Park.

Moss said, “How much does Journalism have left in the tank after running his third race in five weeks?”

Longshot Horse To Come Out Of Nowhere

While Moss acknowledges the Derby horses are the favorites, the long longshot to consider putting on tickets is Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was supposed to run in the Kentucky Derby, but a foot problem led to it being scratched. The same foot issue kept Rodriguez out of the Preakness.

Because there is a 70% chance of rain, a wet track favors a speed horse. In this case, that’s Rodriguez.

The 2025 Belmont Stakes is set for Saturday, June 7. Coverage will air on FOX, FOX Sports app, and FOXSports.com. The race will be held at Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga Springs, NY. Post time is 7:04 p.m. ET.
