Was North Wilkesboro Speedway the runaway winner over NASCAR Cup Series’ All-Star weekend?

Christopher Bell, who enters next weekend’s points event at Charlotte Motor Speedway ranked third in the drivers’ standings, rallied from sixth place over the final 28 lap, outdueling Joey Logano to capture Sunday night’s All-Star Race. And a cool $ 1 million in prize money.

Bell and Logano slammed fenders and challenged each other until Bell ran the reigning series champion out his groove with 10 rotations remaining. The 0.625-mile short track may prove too tempting for NASCAR officials not to schedule a near-future points race at iconic venue, which did not stage a national series event from 1997-2022.

North Wilkesboro’s revitalized track helped grow the 41st exhibition event’s intensity. Multiple three- and four-way position battles were featured, even though points leader Kyle Larson’s No. 5 Chevrolet suffered a broken toe link.

“I did all I could do to hold him off, and he got under me and released the brake and gave me no option,” Logano told FOX Sports. “Kind of just ran me up into the wall, and if I could’ve got to him, he was going around after a move like that. I just couldn’t get back to him.”

Added Bell: “We need more events like this, more races like this,” Bell said. “I love that we revived this race track.”

Larson qualified P21 for next Sunday afternoon’s Indianapolis 500. In his second attempt to complete “The Double,” the 2021 Cup champion is also scheduled to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 in the evening.
