Tre Holloman is one of the most interesting guards in the portal. After three seasons at Michigan State, he’s looking for a bigger role. The Minnesota native is hearing from a number of schools, but the race looks like it’s coming down to North Carolina, NC State, and Villanova—with UNC and NC State making the strongest push.

Holloman A Natural Fit At UNC

UNC lost a lot this offseason. RJ Davis declared, Elliot Cadeau left, and Ian Jackson surprisingly followed into the transfer portal. They need guards who can run the offense and defend—Holloman checks both boxes.

  • 3.7 assists in 23 mins per game last season.
  • 35.6% 3-pt shooter over his college career.
  • Strong on-ball defender.
  • Scored 19 with 7 assists vs UNC in the Maui Invitational.

UNC needs plug-and-play experience. Holloman wouldn’t be expected to carry the scoring load but could slot into a lead guard role quickly. And he’s already visited Chapel Hill.

NC State Wolfpack Want To Land A Lead Guard

NC State is looking to reload under new coach Will Wade. Holloman fits his style—he’s quick, tough, and can push tempo. They’ve got a need in the backcourt and hosted him for a visit.

Holloman wouldn’t have the same spotlight he’d have at UNC, but he might get more touches. It’s a question of role vs exposure. Can Wade capture a major transfer to boost his roster?

Villanova, Baylor, Others In The Mix But Losing Ground

Villanova is still on the table. Baylor too. But Holloman seems focused on the North Carolina schools.

He’s from Minnesota, but the Gophers aren’t pushing hard. Reports say they’ve only shown “casual interest.”

If this were about staying home, Minnesota would be more involved. It’s not. This is about finding the best role and best system.

Best Fit For Tre Holloman? UNC Or NC State Have The Edge

If you’re looking at playing time, coaching, system fit, and visibility, it’s probably coming down to the Tar Heels or Wolfpack. Holloman is the kind of player who can elevate a team’s floor with decision-making and defense.

Expect a decision soon. And expect it to come from Tobacco Road.
