Trey Lance Signs With Chargers

Lance has a new home in the AFC West.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Lance and the Chargers have agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $6.2 million.

The San Francisco 49ers selected Lance with the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The 49ers famously traded three first-round picks and one second-round pick to move up to No. 3.

Lance began the 2021 season as the backup to Jimmy Garoppolo.

Lance missed most of the season with a sprained knee. However, Lance went 1-1 in two starts. Lance finished the season with 603 yards ing, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. The North Dakota State product also rushed for 168 yards and one touchdown.

Lance began the 2022 season as the starting quarterback. Lance started two games before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2. Brock Purdy eventually became the starting quarterback and never relinquished the job.

In August 2023, the 49ers traded Lance to the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round pick. Lance became the Cowboys’ third-string quarterback and never appeared in a game.

Lance began the 2024 season as the third string but moved to backup after Dak Prescott’s season-ending injury in Week 9.

Lance started the final game of the regular season. The 24-year-old completed 20 of 34 es for 244 yards in a 23-19 loss to the Washington Commanders.

Trey Lance Will Compete For The Backup Position

There is no quarterback competition for the starting job in Los Angeles. That belongs to Justin Herbert.

However, Lance will have a shot to compete with Taylor Heinicke to become Herbert’s backup.

Even if Lance never plays, he will get a chance to learn under Jim Harbaugh, an offensive-minded coach with a proven track record of developing quarterbacks like Andrew Luck, Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick, and J.J. McCarthy.
