Jerry Jones Has Spoken To Deion Sanders

Per Sanders about the team’s head coaching vacancy. Sanders is considered a “top candidate,” and Dallas will continue speaking with Coach Prime about him becoming the next head coach.

No formal interview has been scheduled for Sanders. Additionally, the Cowboys will reportedly interview other candidates for the position.

If Sanders gets the Cowboys job, it would complete a meteoric rise in his coaching career.

After coaching at the high school level, Sanders served as the head coach of Jackson State from 2020-2022. Sanders went 27-6, with two Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships.

Sanders left Jackson State to become the head coach of Colorado in 2023. After a 4-8 record in year one, Sanders and Colorado turned things around in 2024 with a 9-4 record.

Sanders’ son, quarterback Travis Hunter, and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter are expected to be selected in the first round of the 2025 draft.

Sanders was a Hall of Fame cornerback, winning a Super Bowl with the Cowboys in 1995. Sanders has no head coaching experience.

Cowboys Part Ways With Mike McCarthy

On Monday, the Cowboys announced they had parted ways with head coach McCarthy.

McCarthy’s contract expired last Wednesday. The Cowboys’ exclusive negotiating rights window with McCarthy was set to close at midnight.

Jones later shared his iration and respect for McCarthy.

“Over the past week, Mike and I had the opportunity to conduct a t review of all aspects of the past season, our players and staff, and also spent considerable time discussing the road forward for the team,” Jones said in a statement. “These discussions were thorough and received an appropriate amount of time and depth to cover. Prior to reaching the point of contract negotiations, though, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to head in a different direction. I thank Mike and wish him, his wife Jessica and their family the best. They have been a wonderful part of our community here.”

McCarthy went 49-35 in five seasons. McCarthy led the Cowboys to three consecutive 12-win seasons and playoff appearances from 2021 to 2023. The Cowboys won one playoff game under McCarthy and never made it past the Divisional Round.
